D.C. AREA SNIPER SHOOTINGS: RESOURCES TO HELP YOUTH DEAL WITH RANDOM VIOLENCE

In recent years our nation's youth have been forced to deal with the hard reality of cruel and random violence: the shootings at Columbine and other schools, the terrorist attacks on New York and our nation's capital, and now a sniper who's rifle has taken aim at a middle schooler. Some young people may be dealing with a sense of powerlessness or hopelessness. Visit http://www.mindohfoundation.org/nonviolence.htm to access a three-part MindOH! lesson plan about nonviolence, and Project Wisdom messages that have been designed to be read over your school's PA or in-house television system. It is our hope that these resources will offer your students hope and empowerment.

OCTOBER 23-30 IS RED RIBBON WEEK: THE MINDOH! FOUNDATION PROVIDES ACTIVITIES AND RESOURCES

National Red Ribbon Week is October 23 - 30. It is a time set aside to make the prevention and treatment of drug and alcohol abuse a national priority by bringing awareness to this pressing issue among our nation's youth. In his National Red Ribbon Week for a Drug-Free America Proclamation, President George W. Bush states that "currently three million young people between the ages of 14 and 17 have an alcohol problem and more than half of America's school-age children have tried illegal drugs by the time they have finished high school." Visit http://www.mindohfoundation.org/redribbon.htm to access resources to use during Red Ribbon Week.

LEARN HOW YOUR STATE IS MANDATING OR ENCOURAGING CHARACTER EDUCATION LEGISLATION

Character education facilitates the development of strong character traits in our youth, such as respect, responsibility, fairness, compassion, courage and honesty. The Character Education Partnership (www.character.org) has developed a document to track character education legislation activities in the United States. Visit the "Latest News" section on MindOH!'s home page at www.mindoh.com to see how your state is making character education a priority.

DR. JANE BLUESTEIN, MINDOH! GUEST AUTHOR, PRESENTS "THE DISCIPLINE TRAP: CATCHING UP TO THE 21ST CENTURY"

Dr. Jane Bluestein, an award-winning author of many books, presents "The Discipline Trap: Catching up to the 21st Century" from her book 21st Century Discipline. With the continuing technological developments of the past few decades, America has changed from an industrial to an information society. This new economy demands a different set of work skills than those required by a factory economy, particularly in areas, such as interaction, innovation, negotiation and communication. Dr. Bluestein's article challenges us to help kids rise to the demands of contemporary realities and examine the attitudes, beliefs and behavior patterns now upon us in the 21st century.
