RESOURCES FOR TEACHING TOLERANCE IN OBSERVANCE OF MARTIN LUTHER KING'S BIRTHDAY
Help MindOH! forward the vision of a great American hero, Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr, by teaching tolerance on Dr. King's birthday on January 20, 2003. MindOH! and Project Wisdom have donated resources to the MindOH! Foundation in hopes that educators and students will take advantage of them in honor of his memory. IN HONOR OF NATIONAL MENTORING MONTH, MINDOH! GUEST AUTHOR ELIZABETH VAN AUKEN SHARES THE LESSONS SHE LEARNED FROM "GLENDA, THE SUPERNATURAL NEIGHBOR"
In education, we often ask the public to become mentors for our students, and unfortunately, the response rate isn't that great. Maybe it is because it seems like a difficult, time consuming job, that requires a lot of effort and energy. When Elizabeth reflected back on the adults that took an interest in her life, her mentors, an amazing thing emerged: they simply took time to take an interest. There weren't necessarily special events involved, or pre-planned trips, but just regular, everyday events made special by some undivided attention. The "magical" theme in her essay/short story isn't meant to imply that her childhood life was free from problems, or that her neighbor was perfect, but rather, that for those special moments when someone takes an undivided interest, the world seems, for even just a little while, magical, and most like the fairy tales we grow up hearing and reading.
