BEST PRACTICE: BURBANK MIDDLE SCHOOL TAKES A TEAM APPROACH TO CAMPUS-WIDE IMPLEMENTATION OF MINDOH!

Burbank Middle School in Houston has been a MindOH! client school for more than a year, and the school's progressive thinking and campus-wide adoption has shown remarkable utilization. In fact, Burbank has doubled program usage over the last month and has raised the bar to new heights! Success at this level has truly been a concentrated team effort, led by an inspirational principal, Dr. Charlotte Parker. An administrator, Ms. Debbie Brown, organized the after-school in house suspension for kids to go to MindOH! after instruction hours. Mr. Herman Jones, 7th grade counselor, collaborated with Ms. Brown in using MindOH! with these kids each day. The school liaison, MS. Geri Ruane, made an effort to gather the MindOH! lesson plans and activity sheets and walk the teachers and counselors through them. The technology department at Burbank has been extremely supportive in making sure the computers meet MindOH! specifications. Additionally, Burbank includes a regular column, called "Character Corner" in the school's campus newspaper, The Eagle's Eye. MindOH! writes these columns each quarter to provide school staff, students, and the community with ideas for character education and successfully implementing MindOH! on the school campus.

RECOMMENDED READING: CONNECTED TO THE FUTURE: A REPORT ON CHILDREN'S INTERNET USE

American children, regardless of their age, income, or ethnicity, greatly increased their use of the Internet from home, school, or library over the past two years. Yet even with these growth trends, children from under-served populations still significantly lag behind more advantaged children both in home and school access. This report from the Corporation for Public Broadcasting examines both the trends and the implications of children connecting to the Internet -- and to their future. Read the entire study at http://www.cpb.org/ed/resources/connected/.
